BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLE (BEV):

BUS: a motor vehicle with motive power, except a trailer, designed for carrying more than 10 persons (including the driver), that is used to transport adults and/or children, unless otherwise noted. A bus shall not exceed 102 inches in width or 45 feet in length except for articulated buses which shall not exceed 62 feet in length. See, 17 NYCRR 720.1 (B).

ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV): A vehicle that uses an electric motor for some or all of the vehicle’s propulsion. This category includes battery electric vehicles (all-electric), hydrogen fueled vehicles and hybrid vehicles.

NEW YORK CITY WIDTH RESTRICTION: Due to it’s narrow streets, New York City has set its own width regulations for school buses. NYC DOT limits the width of school buses to 98 inches. See, 34 R.C.N.Y. § 4-15 (b)(1). However, school buses in the rest of New York State can be up to 102 inches wide according to the NYS Department of Transportation’s definition of a bus.

SCHOOL: Every place of academic, vocational or religious services or instruction for persons under the age of 21 years, except places of higher education. It shall include every child care center, every institution for the care or training of the mentally or physically handicapped; and every day camp. See, 17 NYCRR 720.1 (S).

SCHOOL BUS: New York State defines a school bus as a bus, unless otherwise noted, used to transport children to or from school or other activities. See, 17 NYCRR 720.1 (U).
In NYC, the term “school bus” means every motor vehicle regardless of seating capacity owned by a public or governmental agency or private school and operated for the transportation of pupils, teachers and other persons acting in a supervisory capacity, to or from school or school activities or privately owned and operated on a regular basis for compensation for the transportation of pupils, teachers and other persons acting in a supervisory capacity to or from school or school activities. SUPERCHARGER: Supercharger is the name Tesla has given to their proprietary high-speed electric vehicle charging system which can reach charging speeds of up to 250 kW. Only Tesla’s can use the supercharger system but Tesla has stated in the past that other car manufacturers could use the system. In Europe, Tesla’s actually come with a CCS charging port and can use both the supercharger system and CCS chargers without an adaptor. Tesla is part of the CHAdeMO and CCS consortium and does sell a CHAdeMO adaptor that charges up to 50kW and J1772 adaptor that works on Level 2 chargers up to 19.2kW in the United States.

TYPE A BUS: A bus with a conversion or body constructed upon a van-type or cutaway front section vehicle with a left side driver’s door and designed to carry more than 10 persons.
The following are sub-categories of Type “A” Bus :
i) Type A-I gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds
ii) Type A-II gross vehicle weight rating 10,000 pounds or under. See, 17 NYCRR 720.1 (X).

TYPE B BUS: A bus with a conversion or body constructed and installed upon a van or frontsection vehicle chassis, or stripped chassis, with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds and designed to carry more than 10 persons. Part of the engine is beneath and/or behind the windshield and beside the driver’s seat. The entrance door is behind the front wheels. See, 17 NYCRR 720.1 (Y) .

TYPE C BUS: A bus with a body installed upon a flat-back cowl chassis with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds and designed to carry more than 10 persons. All of the engine is in front of the windshield and the entrance door is behind the front wheels. See, 17 NYCRR 720.1 (Z) .

TYPE D BUS: A bus with a body installed upon a chassis or unitized type construction, with the engine mounted in the front, midship, or rear with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds and designed to carry more than 10 persons. The engine may be behind the windshield and beside the driver’s seat; it may be at the rear of the bus, behind the rear wheels; or midship between the front and rear axles. The entrance door is ahead of the front wheels. See, 17 NYCRR 720.1 (aa) .
